Hobgoblin Music Brighton Fringe Event Schedule

Festival fever reaches our Brighton shop!

With Glastonbury announcing their dates and acts last week, we thought it would be the appropriate time to announce the line up for our Brighton shop's Festival events.

We are also attempting to talk Mike, the Brighton shop manager, into growing a Michael Eavis style no-moustache-beard and cover the shop in mud and inadequate toilet facilities, but he isn't having it. Some people are no fun.

So without any further ado, here is the full line up (ALL EVENTS BEGIN AT 1pm) :

Friday 1st - Festival Opening Show featuring live music from Porchlight Smoker + Shauna Parker

Porchlight Smoker -‘Foot Stomping, whooping, mind-blowing wonderfulness from Brighton’s best known roots outfit’ - www.porchlightsmoker.com

Shauna Parker - 'Canadian-born Shauna's vocals switch effortlessly between the haunting torch songs of Patsy Cline and full-throated rockabilly raunch’ - http://shaunaparker.wix.com/saloon-bar-band

Wednesday 6th - Workshop Wednesday - Paul Gardner ‘Bodhrans & Bones'

Paul is our London store manager and will be presenting this all ages and abilities workshop that can teach even the rawest recruit the basics of these two common folk percussion instruments. Paul has a wicked sense of humour and an easy familiarity with even the most esoteric of our instrument offering. Not to be missed!

Friday 8th - Live Music from Meriels Secret Ukulele Ensemble + Josie Fiddler

Josie has recently moved to Hove from NW Ireland. She will be performing Irish, Scottish and 'Celtic' song melodies and tunes.. As well as acoustic Fiddle, Flute, Whistle and Piano, Josie has a passion for 5 string electric fiddle (and an array of pedals and effects!) - so can be found playing Rock and other genres too!http://members.lastminutemusicians.com/josie_fiddler.html

Meriels Secret - ‘we have a bass, tenor, concert and banjo ukulele between us and our intent is to bring folk, funk & fun to the show!' www.facebook.com/merielssecret

Monday 11th - 'Masterclass Monday' – Piano Accordion with Mark McCabe

Hobgoblin Birmingham's manager and resident Accordion spotter Mark McCabe is getting a passport to travel this far south to provide some hints and tips on the Piano Accordion. Mark is a specialist in Irish trad/folk styles and a fine player to boot.

Wednesday 13th - Workshop Wednesday ‘Nobby’s Ukes’

Hobgoblin veteran and all round lovely fellow Mark ‘Nobby’ Stiles will be leading this all ages and abilities ukulele workshop that will give a real headstart to anyone wanting to take up this popular and fun instrument.

Friday 15th - Live Music from Rachel Reis & Fiddes Smith

Rachel Ries - 'crafts sly and compassionate songs for the crooked hearted. Her songs are fine-tuned delicacy with a snarl and disarming candour. While South Dakota will always be home, Rachel splits her time between rural Vermont and Brooklyn and will be playing select European dates this May.’ www.rachelries.com

Fiddes Smith – Mutli-instrumtalist and former Peanut Albinos frontman performs a selection of his solo material. Expect special guests, strange chords and broken strings - www.fiddessmith.com

Monday 18th - 'Masterclass Monday' - Banjo Techniques with Nobby Stiles

Hobgoblin stalwart Nobby’s second contribution to our festival events, this time a demonstration of his finely honed banjo skills!

Wednesday 20th - Workshop Wednesday - ‘Guitar Setup Essentials’ with Dave Hardwick

Dave is Hobgoblins‘go-to’ luthier and in this workshop he will take you through a number of essential techniques commonly used in guitar/fretted instrument setups.

Friday 22nd – Live Music - blues and americana with Stuart Barbour & Mike Ross

Mike Ross - ‘delivers uplifting & intelligent Americana with a bluesy bias and a soulful swing’ - www.mikerossmusic.co.uk

Wednesday 27th – 'Workshop Wednesday' Pip's Melodion Tips

Pip Ives is our Canterbury shop's free reed nerd and is taking a trip to the seaside to provide hints and tips on the melodeon. Pip is a specialist in English folk songs & tunes on melodeon and Anglo concertina.

Friday 29th - Instore Performance Competition Final

The winners of the 4 heats get to perform in-store for a panel of judges, with the overall winner taking away a fabulous £500 Ashbury guitar!
